An alarm specialist does not think of the job as "an NFPA 72 inspection." The job is a building full of devices, a panel in a basement, a battery calculation, and a report that has to satisfy the AHJ and, in a hospital, a surveyor. The right software depends on how many of those devices you test, which editions your jurisdictions enforce, and whether healthcare is part of your book. This guide compares the tools alarm contractors actually shortlist and says who each one fits.

How we compared them

Evaluation criteria

Competitor details reflect each vendor's own website as checked on October 27, 2026 (sources at the bottom of the page). "Not advertised" means we could not find it on the vendor's site, not that the product lacks it. None of the competitor sites we checked lists the NFPA 72 editions they support. Confirm features and pricing directly with each vendor. Fire Inspect Hub details are first-party.

The tools, one by one

Inspect Point

Inspection, proposal and work-order software for fire protection contractors, run on Apple devices. Its site lists a Fire Alarm & Security trade covering NFPA 72 and ULC at device level, Joint Commission and DNV forms, and it sends results to AHJs through The Compliance Engine, IROL or LivSafe.

Strength: device-level alarm workflows inside a mature contractor platform. One limitation: the field app runs on Apple devices only (no Android), pricing is not published, and plans start at three technicians (or one to two technicians doing 400+ inspections a year).

Best for: established alarm contractors on Apple devices who want device-level testing and a quoted, full-platform plan.

Uptick

A cloud platform built for fire protection, with scheduling, forms, quoting, billing, iOS and Android apps, an offline mode and a stated Compliance Engine upload. Its public pages describe forms in general terms and do not list NFPA 72 or device-level features.

Strength: a full operations platform with monthly billing and no lock-in. One limitation: NFPA 72 specifics are not advertised, so confirm device-level testing and editions in a demo; pricing is per user and quote-only, for teams of three to fifty technicians.

Best for: multi-crew fire and life safety companies that want one system for operations and are willing to confirm alarm depth in a demo.

ServiceTrade

A field service platform whose inspections module turns findings into deficiencies and repair work, with a Compliance Engine integration. Its site describes NFPA-compliant forms without naming NFPA 72 detail.

Strength: service operations from inspection to repair. One limitation: it spans several trades, so fire alarm is one part of a broader platform, and pricing is quoted by team size.

Best for: contractors that run alarm work alongside other trades.

BuildingReports

Its FireScan app covers inspection, testing and maintenance reporting for fire alarm systems, built around a barcode on each device, with reports kept online. BuildingReports announced Compliance Engine submission in June 2026.

Strength: a scanned, device-by-device record with long-standing AHJ reach. One limitation: its workflow is built around scanning a barcode on each device, and its pages do not name NFPA 72 editions or publish pricing.

Best for: contractors that want a barcode-scanned device record inside the BuildingReports network.

ZenFire

An AI-oriented fire inspection product from ZenTrades with NFPA 72 forms, a sample panel checklist (batteries, smoke detectors, pull stations), deficiency-to-quote, invoicing, offline access and a Compliance Engine integration.

Strength: inspection through invoice in one product. One limitation: ZenFire does not publish a price, and its pages do not state NFPA 72 editions or device-level history.

Best for: shops that want inspection, quoting and invoicing in one tool.

Joyfill

A forms-first inspection app with native iOS and Android apps, offline form filling, published pricing with a free plan, and an NFPA 72 form in its library.

Strength: quick to start with no long-term contract. One limitation: its site does not state a Compliance Engine connection, device-level history or edition support, and the free plan is capped at ten submissions a month.

Best for: shops that need a digital NFPA 72 form and little else.

Fire Inspect Hub

Built for independent and small-to-mid alarm contractors. You pick the NFPA 72 edition at the start of each inspection (2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 or 2025) and the checklist follows it, with the code section on every item. A fire alarm system carries its devices as their own records: add them from the client page or during the inspection, see each device's last test and history, and export the last results as a CSV.

One toggle switches the same inspection between the standard NFPA 72 report, Joint Commission EC.02.03.05 and DNV NIAHO. The install side is covered too: the NFPA 72 Record of Completion as a dual-signed document, and battery and secondary-power documentation that records the contractor's §10.6 calculation on the report. Inspector credentials (NICET levels, state license) print under the signature. For AHJs on The Compliance Engine it cuts the re-keying: copy the required fields from a completed inspection, or upload a CSV.

Strength: edition choice, device records and healthcare formats at a published, month-to-month price. One limitation: it records the contractor's battery calculation but does not perform it, and it is not built for large multi-trade service operations.

Best for: alarm shops of one to twenty inspectors, especially those with healthcare clients. $54 per user, per month, with no headcount tiers; larger and multi-location teams get a quote.

Which should you choose?

What to look for in 2027

Edition support you can see

The 2025 edition of NFPA 72 is the newest, but many AHJs still enforce an earlier edition, and adoption moves jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Ask each vendor which editions its checklist follows and whether you choose the edition per inspection. In our check, no competitor site listed its supported editions.

Devices as records, not rows

A system-level pass or fail does not tell the next inspector which smoke detector failed last year. Device records with their own history do. Ask how devices get into the system (by hand, by import, by scan) and how long that takes for a building with several hundred devices.

Healthcare formats if you serve hospitals

Joint Commission surveyors expect EC.02.03.05 documentation and DNV surveyors work from NIAHO. If hospitals are in your book, check whether those formats are built in or something you assemble by hand. See our Joint Commission fire alarm page and the Joint Commission software guide.

The install paperwork

Most alarm companies win the inspection contract by installing the system. A tool that produces the Record of Completion and the battery documentation at acceptance keeps that record in the same place as every inspection that follows.

Compliance Engine reporting

Ask exactly how a finished inspection reaches The Compliance Engine: direct submission, a file upload, or fields you copy over. See also our NFPA 72 fire alarm inspection software page.

FAQ

Which NFPA 72 edition should fire alarm inspection software support?

The edition your AHJ enforces, which is not always the newest. Jurisdictions adopt NFPA 72 editions at different times, so software that lets you pick the edition per inspection avoids keeping separate templates.

What does device-level fire alarm inspection mean?

Each initiating device and notification appliance is its own record with its own test result, instead of one pass or fail for the whole system. It lets you show which device failed and track that device across years.

Which fire alarm inspection software produces Joint Commission and DNV reports?

Inspect Point lists Joint Commission and DNV forms on its site. Fire Inspect Hub switches one NFPA 72 inspection between the standard report, Joint Commission EC.02.03.05 and DNV NIAHO formats.

Which fire alarm inspection software works with The Compliance Engine?

Inspect Point, Uptick, ServiceTrade, BuildingReports and ZenFire each state a Compliance Engine connection on their own sites. Fire Inspect Hub cuts the re-keying: copy the required fields from a completed inspection, or upload a CSV.

How much does fire alarm inspection software cost?

Most vendors quote per user or per technician and do not publish prices. Joyfill and Fire Inspect Hub publish their prices. Confirm current pricing on each vendor's site.
